Lactation Energy Bites: The Life Saving Early Postpartum Snack

After the birth of both of my boys, one of the biggest things I remember when starting to breastfeed and being incredibly sleep deprived, was my constant feeling of being famished. I was absolutely starving. All. The. Time. When my first born arrived, I was snacking 24-7. I was just learning how to breastfeed, and I was pumping after every feed and waking up every 2 hours to nurse him. The only thing that really helped me survive the early phase of postpartum was food. When I discovered the infamous lactation energy bites, life in the early days got a little more manageable!

Meal Trains Rock

I think every mom would admit that when you first come home from the hospital with your sweet nugget, the last thing you want to do is cook. Especially if you have additional kids. We were SO grateful to everyone who jumped on a meal train for us and brought us tons of delicious, home cooked meals after both of our boys came home.

The gems of this helpful group of people were the women who understood how challenging and exhausting breastfeeding is in the beginning. They understood the importance of extra calories and knew the secret ingredients to helping increase milk supply They identified themselves by providing the delicious lactation energy bites.

The Hero Snack of the Early Days

Lactation Energy Bites

Lactation energy bites are among my favorite snacks for energy, fuel and fuller breasts. Not only are they delicious, but they contain key ingredients to help with both energy and milk supply.

  • Oatmeal – contains iron, which is an important and needed supplement for women who are breastfeeding on a daily basis.
  • Peanut Butter – contains protein and healthy fats that give your body energy to keep going and to keep making milk.
  • Ground Flaxseed – flaxseed oil contains what is called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which converts into omega-3 fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) when consumed. ALA supports the production of breastmilk and will be passed in part to baby as well.
  • Coconut/Coconut Oil – extremely rich in vitamins A, B and C, phosphorus, minerals and protein. Consuming more coconut during breastfeeding helps produce milk that is richer in each of these things. Taking coconut in most forms is very healthy and beneficial for your milk supply and content at any stage of breastfeeding!
  • Chocolate – cocoa has been known, in the form of cocoa butter, to help with cracked and sore nipples. It is also tasty and uplifts your mood. Be careful how much you consume, because it all contains caffeine, which consumed in excess can affect your baby.
  • Brewer’s yeast – I have not used this supplement in my recipes so far, but some say it helps increase milk supply. If you would like to try it in your lactation snacks, be my guest!
