Happy Thanksgiving!
Hey mommas! Growing up, did you ever think about what amazing things your breasts would one day be able to do? Did you even have an idea? I certainly do not remember thinking about how amazing my boobs were as a teenager. Instead, I was trying to hide my insecurities and learn how to apply makeup! I believe many mothers never realized before having children just how amazing and purposeful their breasts could be! They have a purpose other than making us attractive to our male counterparts. That may come as a shock to some. The real purpose of boobs is not just to make us attractive, but to FEED OUR BABIES! This is something that I will ALWAYS, ALWAYS be thankful for. And what better timing to be thankful than during the holiday season.
We Have Been Blessed
This week is Thanksgiving, and every year my family likes to go around the table and share what we are thankful for. Though I may not share it out loud at the dinner table, I consider myself very blessed to have my breasts. It might sound a bit silly. It sounds silly to me when I read it. But nonetheless it is very true. Mothers have been given a wonderful gift. To be able to feed our babies with our bodies is one of the most precious things we will experience in our lives. Breastfeeding is a choice, a blessing and a sacrifice. However, not all mothers are able to do this. Whether it is a health condition, disability or any other reason that impedes a mother from breastfeeding, some women are unable to breastfeed. If you breastfeed your baby, let this be a reminder to you of how blessed you are to be able to do so.
Sharing The Gratitude
There are a number of things I would share aloud at the Thanksgiving dinner table. I am thankful for my health and the ability to bond with my babies through breastfeeding. I am thankful for my mother who has been a wonderful example for me in more ways than one, and for my mother-in-law, who was such a support during my first experience of breastfeeding and still is today. My husband is a constant support for not just my breastfeeding journey but for my life journey. Not to mention all of the beautiful women in my life who have been such wonderful friends, examples and inspirations for me. I have learned from you, and I hope you will learn from me. Most of all, I am thankful for my babies who have given my life meaning that I never knew was possible. And let’s face it, without my babies, my boobs would be much less important.
Don’t Forget the Turkey!
I cannot close out a Thanksgiving post without mentioning one of the biggest topics of this holiday. Food. I am ABSOLUTELY thankful for, grateful for, and blessed by God with food. I am always up to talk about anything that involves eating. What is your favorite Thanksgiving dish? I have to say the stuffing is one of mine, and it has to come with gravy. There is an incredible amount of dishes and recipes that are served at Thanksgiving dinner, and we haven’t even gotten to dessert yet. And here is a happy reminder for all of you breastfeeding mamas: you still get those 500 extra calories, so eat up all the turkey and pumpkin pie! It’s just one more thing to be grateful for.
Remember to Give Thanks
I think it is important for all of us to take a little bit of time to be thankful. Not just during the holiday season, but everyday. It can become so easy to slip into our negative mindset and begin to drown in the things that are challenging for us. Breastfeeding is hard. It is something to be appreciated, but it can be exhausting. It takes a toll on our bodies, but it also helps keep us and our little ones healthy. During this season, take a moment to remember the WHY in your decision to breastfeed your baby. Have some gratitude for the ability your body has to provide. God has blessed us with so many wonderful things in our lives. We better take the time to be grateful for them. And so let me ask you this: in addition to breastfeeding, what are you grateful for this Thanksgiving?
